The city of Surprise is home to professional baseball teams during the spring training season, as well as minor league baseball teams year round. Surprise baseball teams have access to the city’s state-of-the-art training and recreational facilities. These facilities, combined with the city’s climate, are some of the main reasons that professional teams were attracted to the area.
Two renowned major league baseball teams, the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers, both call Surprise their spring training home. While many teams go to Florida for spring training, Surprise was able to lure these teams with its new and expensive facilities. The Surprise spring training complex cost over $40 million and includes both practice fields, clubhouses, and a 10,500-seat stadium for the teams. Other baseball related training facilities such as weight rooms are included as well.
The spring training facility opened in 2003, making it one of the most modern facilities available. The area around the training facility also includes an aquatic center, a library, and a park complete with a fishing lake and a playground. The citizens of Surprise are able to enjoy these just as much as the professional players who use them during the spring.
While the city is known for the Royals and Rangers, they are not the only baseball teams located in Surprise. Baseball is very popular in Surprise, and Surprise is home to a variety of teams and leagues for all ages. Many players trying to make it into Major League Baseball play in the Arizona Fall League to hone their skills and get the attention of major league scouts. Surprise baseball teams that play in the Arizona Fall League include the Surprise Scorpions and the Grand Canyon Rafters. The players who are a part of these teams are from the minor leagues or are high draft choices.
There are Surprise baseball teams for youths, as well as a golden league for older players. All of these teams get to take advantage of the recreational baseball facilities the city has to offer. The many leagues operate at different times of the year and are affordable to join so that almost anyone can play.
Surprise baseball teams, whether minor league, major league, or youth and adult league all have access to great training and recreational facilities and are lucky enough to be stationed in a city that loves and supports baseball. The city itself has been helped economically by the baseball teams coming to Surprise, and is growing rapidly and is recognized nationwide for its baseball training facilities.
